Fancy October Ideas: Day of the Dead, Candy Corn Math & More

October 19, 2017 By fancyfreein4th

I LOVE October! The weather is changing, Trader Joes is full of pumkinlicious goodies and there are so many fun ways to celebrate in the classroom- keeping it fancy, fun and educational.

Candy Corn Math decimals

First of, CANDY CORN! Every year I love finding ways to use this favorite fall candy in the classroom.  This year I created a fun Decimal Review Math Center where they compare decimals using candy corn as the greater than or less than symbol. I leveled these so they’d be easy to differentiate for the different student’s in the class.  Having a more straight forward comparing of decimals and then  a set of 2 step problems where they need to add or subtract the decimals before they compare. The kids loved having the helpful math love notes remind them of the procedures to be successful when adding and comparing decimals. You can grab this goodie HERE.

Every year we go through the Scientific Method with The Great Candy Corn Experiment.

The Candy Corn Experiment

This fun experiment allows students dissolve candy corn in various solvents, make hypotheses, record their information and they eat it up… we actually, they see which solvent eats the candy corn up the quickest. You can read more about this experiment at this blog post HERE.

I partnered with Oriental Trading Company and created this fun and festive vocabulary review of root words.

It made such a cute bulletin board and will be up to help the students until December!

Our class celebrates Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.

After they research the holiday with articles and videos and they write a narrative about who they are going to celebrate this year. Our hallway looked gorgeous thanks to all these goodies from Oriental Trading Company. You can see how I made this great bulletin board and other activities we did this year to celebrate this important cultural celebration here.

Speaking of festive bulletin boards! Apples and ABCs makes sure we always have a fun bulletin board up for our students to enjoy. We love this Boo-tiful one.

….and of course there is Staff fun around this time of the year.October is typically a stressful time for teachers because the honeymoon phase has worn off, classes become more talkative and then there is conferences and report cards.  To spread staff morale, how about Boo’ing your staff with some of those Halloween goodies all around?  This year we were boo’ed by our fantastic Special Ed teacher. What a simple way to spread kindness and up those teacher spirits!  You can grab these cute labels for FREE here at Rockin Resources TpT store.

Last but not least, do you dress up for Halloween? Last year, our team was emojis and this year we are dressing up as Waldo! Fancy and almost free aka easy and cheap. Looking forward to a festive rest of the month and can’t wait to share some Fancy November ideas with you next month!
