How I got classroom supplies donated to my class

June 30, 2012 By fancyfreein4th

This past school year, a few of my fellow coworkers got classroom donations from the website DonorsChoose.  Since I have worked the from 4th through 7th grade, my classroom library is a disorganized mix of levels ranging from Junie B. Jones to The Outsiders.  I realized that I needed some books for my up and coming 4th graders to use.  I decided to give DonorsChoose a try just 2 days after I submitted my request I got $337.58 worth of 4th grade books donated to my class!  Here is my post on the DonorsChoose website.

I will be getting these books delivered to my new school in September.  All I have to do in response is send handwritten thank you, written by my students to each of my donors (5 letters per donor). In addition, I have to send a picture of the students using the materials that were donated. I have until November to send these items to DonorsChoose. That’s it!  Two of my colleagues used this website and it worked! I saw their donated books first hand.  I am excited to receive my boxes of books.  I encourage you to try this out too. If you have any questions about the process just leave me a comment.

Congrats!!!! I'm sure your students will be so excited by the beautiful sight of BRAND NEW books! I've never done a Donors Choose project, but I'll have to give it a go! The only problem is my school is not in a high poverty area, but donors sometimes forget: I don't live in the school boundaries necessarily. My teaching salary is the same wherever I teach! I'm trying not to spend so much, but it's hard. I love buying books!!

There’s so much advice I would tell first year- There’s so much advice I would tell first year- teacher-me…. Especially after the last (almost) 2 years of teaching; barely afloat. This year is so hard. I have to stop regularly and tell my student teacher, “it’s never been like this”. But to my core, it’s always been- children first, relationships first, or nothing else matters. Though this year is tough in new ways, there’s still much hope and laughter each day. Thanks @eveleon26 for reminding me of my first, wonderful year of teaching- so I can bring that energy, excitement each day- no matter the circumstance. For all of my teacher friends out there, I see you- I know it’s hard- and I’m grateful for you. (P.S-it’s almost winter break, you got this!) #tiredteacher #cleareyesfullheartscantlose
