Sweet Summer Finds

July 3, 2012 By fancyfreein4th

My brain is on overdrive as I think about the possibilities of this up and coming school year.  I was literally laying in bed the other day at 6:30 AM thinking about my classroom theme, decorating, organizing, lesson planning! It is so easy to get carried away with spending money. Figuring out how to vamp up the classroom while not breaking the bank is an art form.  Here are two of my Sweet Summer Finds.

1) After switching classrooms every year I have taught, I am over the expensive fadeless paper and onto the budget friendly fabric.  I decided my classroom theme is going to be owls, but to mix things up by using fun patterns. I found some polka dot and chevron fabric for the walls and I am going to make curtains from the owl fabric. I got the fabric on Amazon.com and used a gift card I had floating around from last Christmas.

2) One of the biggest issues regarding classroom organization that I had last year was the amount of books and workbooks that my students had crammed in their desks. It was a mess.  I saw some great chair pockets on some teacher blogs but when I looked into buying Seat Sacks, but a class set would have cost me over $300!
I saw on Nerdy Teacher Confessions Blog that she used Home
Depot half aprons instead. Lo and behold, I found these half aprons on Ebay and bought 30 for $25.  This was totally a steal and will fix all those cluttery desks

3) Last but not least my dear friend from Apples to ABC’s told me about the Michaels app on the iPhone.  How did I not know about this forever and a day ago? If you don’t have it and you frequent Michaels as much as I do, then download it now. It is a free app that you can download onto your phone and it has coupons on it that range from 15-40%. No more forgetting the coupon at home (which I always do). Here is a screen shot from my phone. I will be using this baby today!

I would love to here from you all about other budget friendly classroom ideas or stores that you find inexpensive supplies.

I'm in the same boat as you – I'm going into my 4th year of teaching, and I've had to change classrooms and schools every. single. year. I'm ready to settle in in one place!! But I guess the plus side is, I haven't been able to accumulate TOO much clutter! šŸ™‚

I love the idea of the Michaels app! Off to download it right now, thanks for sharing!

I too am a fan of fabric! Thanks for sharing the tip on the Home Depot aprons, I hate how messy and crammed 4th grade desks can become, especially if you have five required textbooks among the workbooks and notebooks!

I'm thinking JoAnn's might have something like the Michael's app also because I was able to click a link in my emailed coupon that sent a text message to my phone with the 15%off coupon!

Love finding other 4th grade teacher bloggers – will be following you! (I'm a newbie myself)

While the phrase, ā€œOpen schoolsā€ bothers me be While the phrase, ā€œOpen schoolsā€ bothers me because it minimizes the HUGE lengths that teachers have gone through this past year. Where we, in a split moment, closed our classrooms and said goodbye to our students not knowing how this was going to play out. No matter whether we are teaching virtually, hybrid or even in a social distanced format...school has never been closed. Teachers went from being called heroes šŸ¦øā€ā™€ļø a year ago to being strongly criticized and undervalued. I am so proud and inspired by all of my teacher friends who have had to reinvent the wheel this year. I am so relieved that this is the first step back to the classroom setting where the students will continue to learn, flourish and be like ā€œthe good ole daysā€. Dose one done āœ…. One step closer to being back in the classroom, IRL!
Spending this lazy Sunday afternoon writing šŸ’•Va Spending this lazy Sunday afternoon writing šŸ’•Valentine’s to my students. I am writing different figurative language notes on each postcard. Then we are going to share them on GoogleMeets during our morning meeting and vote which figurative language is on each student’s post card! You can take the teacher out of the classroom but they will still find ways to engage; no matter the distance! This year I have to mail these to my students ((because of distance learning)) but who doesn’t love some good ole snail mail 🐌 šŸ’Œ.
This isn’t the best picture, but that’s not th This isn’t the best picture, but that’s not the point...

I love being a teacher. I am aways challenged and get to be creative (especially these past 11 months). I feel at home at my school, and I’ve missed it so much since working at home. My district is in a zip code that is highly impacted with COVID-19, and we have felt the effects tremendously. Everyday, I am amazed by how resilient my students have been since their little world’s šŸŒ changed on March 13th, 2020. It’s been one, wild ride, reinventing teaching, trying to stay motivated, trying to keep them engaged while feeling supported and seen. Yet, I’m hopeful this chapter soon will end. Amidst all of the unexpected and difficult things that have happened this last year... there’s still a lot of good out there. Look at this šŸ’› glimmer of hope and goodness. My uncle and Father in Law just made a class set of desks for my students (plus 30 more for other kids at my school). They used their stimulus money to give back to my school community. This desk will be their own special spot, and memory of the time we learned from home. I’m feeling really grateful and I can’t wait to see past the masks and imagine the smiles that my students will have when they pick these new family heirlooms up on Friday!
Sometimes it is all about the little goals you mak Sometimes it is all about the little goals you make for 2021. Ones like drinking more water and making sure to stand while distance teaching. I miss the days of walking around the classroom, running down the the stairs to grab my class after recess and hopping into a coworkers classroom at lunch.
Cheers to the New Year. I felt like I needed a lon Cheers to the New Year. I felt like I needed a longer winter break but as soon as the school day started, it was game on. I was so excited to see my students online, ready to learn. I am constantly in awe of how resilient they are and how even though we have yet to be together in person, we have created such a supportive and close community. We giggle, we work, we do the best we can and feel good about it together.
