Whole Class Journals #4: Informative

July 31, 2012 By fancyfreein4th

Last year was my first year teaching 4th and the year before that I taught 7th. In California, both of those grades have a state test in writing where the teacher has no idea what the prompt will be.  It is a mixed bag and we speculate what the prompt will be… will it be summary, response to literature, persuasive, expository, informative, imaginative narrative, or personal narrative. To ensure we cover all of these genres and their, after Winter Break we go into WRITING mode teaching all the genres of writing in a really condensed way because the test is in early spring.  Each genre is so specific in language, thinking map, transitions, structure and to rush through them is a tragedy.

In an effort to counter this from happening this coming year, I have decided to use Whole Class Journals to help me cover, introduce and expose the students to various genres in writing in a non-threatening and less formal way.  I am so excited to see how my students will excel because of these babies.  I know I shared with you my Narrative set of Whole Class Journals, as well as my Persuasive and Compare and Contrast sets. Today I would like to share with you my Explanatory/Informative set:

This pack includes 8 different topics that will help your students practice explaining how to do something and give information. In addition, there is mind map to help students plan and a student cheat sheet to help them get started. The topics that I have created are structured and worded in a way that will help the student work independently and come out with a product that is well executed and well written! You can find all my Whole Class Journals on sale for this week at my Teachers Pay Teachers Store.
So, shake up your center times by adding Whole Class Journal prompts into your classroom  This is a great addition to any writers workshop, Center Time or for fast finishers. Each student in the class has a chance to respond to the topic and read what their peers have to say. It is a great community building piece that will work in any 3rd-7th grade classroom.
6 Persuasive Prompts
10 Narrative Prompts- Personal and Imaginative
6 Compare and Contrast Prompts

Hope you love these as much as I do!

I love that you have broken the prompts down by genre. I went to the store but there doesn't seem to be any sort of sale happening on them.

While the phrase, ā€œOpen schoolsā€ bothers me be While the phrase, ā€œOpen schoolsā€ bothers me because it minimizes the HUGE lengths that teachers have gone through this past year. Where we, in a split moment, closed our classrooms and said goodbye to our students not knowing how this was going to play out. No matter whether we are teaching virtually, hybrid or even in a social distanced format...school has never been closed. Teachers went from being called heroes šŸ¦øā€ā™€ļø a year ago to being strongly criticized and undervalued. I am so proud and inspired by all of my teacher friends who have had to reinvent the wheel this year. I am so relieved that this is the first step back to the classroom setting where the students will continue to learn, flourish and be like ā€œthe good ole daysā€. Dose one done āœ…. One step closer to being back in the classroom, IRL!
Spending this lazy Sunday afternoon writing šŸ’•Va Spending this lazy Sunday afternoon writing šŸ’•Valentine’s to my students. I am writing different figurative language notes on each postcard. Then we are going to share them on GoogleMeets during our morning meeting and vote which figurative language is on each student’s post card! You can take the teacher out of the classroom but they will still find ways to engage; no matter the distance! This year I have to mail these to my students ((because of distance learning)) but who doesn’t love some good ole snail mail 🐌 šŸ’Œ.
This isn’t the best picture, but that’s not th This isn’t the best picture, but that’s not the point...

I love being a teacher. I am aways challenged and get to be creative (especially these past 11 months). I feel at home at my school, and I’ve missed it so much since working at home. My district is in a zip code that is highly impacted with COVID-19, and we have felt the effects tremendously. Everyday, I am amazed by how resilient my students have been since their little world’s šŸŒ changed on March 13th, 2020. It’s been one, wild ride, reinventing teaching, trying to stay motivated, trying to keep them engaged while feeling supported and seen. Yet, I’m hopeful this chapter soon will end. Amidst all of the unexpected and difficult things that have happened this last year... there’s still a lot of good out there. Look at this šŸ’› glimmer of hope and goodness. My uncle and Father in Law just made a class set of desks for my students (plus 30 more for other kids at my school). They used their stimulus money to give back to my school community. This desk will be their own special spot, and memory of the time we learned from home. I’m feeling really grateful and I can’t wait to see past the masks and imagine the smiles that my students will have when they pick these new family heirlooms up on Friday!
Sometimes it is all about the little goals you mak Sometimes it is all about the little goals you make for 2021. Ones like drinking more water and making sure to stand while distance teaching. I miss the days of walking around the classroom, running down the the stairs to grab my class after recess and hopping into a coworkers classroom at lunch.
Cheers to the New Year. I felt like I needed a lon Cheers to the New Year. I felt like I needed a longer winter break but as soon as the school day started, it was game on. I was so excited to see my students online, ready to learn. I am constantly in awe of how resilient they are and how even though we have yet to be together in person, we have created such a supportive and close community. We giggle, we work, we do the best we can and feel good about it together.
