Whole Class Journals & Fabulous Find Friday

July 13, 2012 By fancyfreein4th

Today I am linking up with Elizabeth in  Fun in 4b for her super fun Fabulous Find Friday!
As you all know, this is the best time of year for teachers because the Target Dollar Section is loaded with classroom possibilities.
I went to Target because it was SOOOO hot at my house (no air conditioning! 100+ degree weather= bad news). It was a perfect excuse to peruse the aisles while sipping on an Icee and enjoy someone else’s air conditioning! I found so many amazing things while there!
This is what I got scored:
 -5 new table supply caddies
-10 packs of mini white board markers (3 markers in each pack), which will be perfect for our math whiteboard practice
-2 chevron bins- that I can use for storage or no names, oh the endless possibilities of bins in a classroom!
– 3 owl rugs!
– 2 owl cork boards, and one regular one that I can hang on the wall and use for something amazing, I am sure….
– pencil packs, stickers, awards and thank you cards.
While at Target I also bought some notebooks and labels to make the whole class journals that I Recently  posted about.  I found these journals on Pinterest and was totally Pin-spired from Emily in I Love My Classroom. I decided to make my own to use during center time.  I tweaked around with the topics and added some more explicit instructions to better guide my students.  Here is my rendition of these journals. I posted my journal topics on my TpT store.

Ta-da!  These journals will be great to incorporate various genre writing for my 4th graders, which is so important since they are tested so heavily this year in writing.  I usually start the beginning of the year with an emphasis on narrative writing. The journal topics that I created cover imaginative and personal narrative.  Later on in the second and third trimesters I will focus more on expository, summary and persuasive topics, but this is a good start.  You can find my topics on my TpT store! Check it out!
I am so excited to use these items and even more excited to see what other people found this week for their classroom! A special thanks to Emily in I Love My Classroom for the journal idea and Elizabeth in  Fun in 4b for the linky party!
Tata for now! Have a Fabulous Friday (the 13th) everyone!

I LOVE the journal idea!! I am going to use that idea this year. I just started my blog this week after first being introduced into this world two weeks ago! Whew!! I can't believe what I have been missing. There are so many great ideas here and people to connect to. I am across the country in NY (western NY, rural area by the Great Lakes) and am looking for a new pen pal buddy for my 4th graders next year if you are interested. My pen pal teacher from last year is moving to another placement. I will have about 23 students for ELA. Let me know!

Great minds think alike! I also pinned the whole class journals – I haven't quite figured out what topics yet, but I am definitely going to use them as well. Somewhere on another blog I saw using them as reading material during the day as well.

I love your blog and am your newest follower!

The owl rugs are the cutest! I wonder if they still have those at my Target. Hmmm… might need to make a trip tonight!

There’s so much advice I would tell first year- There’s so much advice I would tell first year- teacher-me…. Especially after the last (almost) 2 years of teaching; barely afloat. This year is so hard. I have to stop regularly and tell my student teacher, “it’s never been like this”. But to my core, it’s always been- children first, relationships first, or nothing else matters. Though this year is tough in new ways, there’s still much hope and laughter each day. Thanks @eveleon26 for reminding me of my first, wonderful year of teaching- so I can bring that energy, excitement each day- no matter the circumstance. For all of my teacher friends out there, I see you- I know it’s hard- and I’m grateful for you. (P.S-it’s almost winter break, you got this!) #tiredteacher #cleareyesfullheartscantlose
