A Fancy Open House with Apples and ABCs

June 13, 2017 By fancyfreein4th

This being my ninth year teaching, and teaching with one of my best friends in the entire world, Michelle from Apples and ABCs, I knew this year’s Open House would be one for the books.

I am so excited to share some of the things we did with our students this year.  Enjoy the show!

Here is a view from when you first walk into our room.  The desks aren’t usually in rows like this, we had our state testing so we had to put them in front facing rows.

We read Wonder this year and it really set the tone of our classroom. We loved the picture book We’re all Wonders– and we got this freebie from the wonderful Create Teach Share. The students loved connecting to the book’s theme and sharing it with their parent’s during open house.

Our students love this flexible seating option and the emoji pillows are always a hit- gotta grab some new ones for next year.

Here is a sneak peek of our math bulletin boards- all geometry’d out.  Both of these activities are freebies. You can check out my post at Oriental Trading Company’s educational blog to grab the Geometry Town freebie and the Neon Angles freebie is here.

The last novel we read was By the Great Horn Spoon. I love reading this with my fourth graders because it ties in social studies so well.  The students loved evaluating character traits and tracking along with the story with this Flip Book as well as learning about the Gold Rush with these Gold Rush Grams. It made a beautiful outdoor bulletin board.

Here is a closer look…

Here is a look at our Science Bulletin Board showing off our knowledge of simple circuits and Michelle made an adorable Photo Booth for parents to take pictures with their kiddos.

Where the magic happens! I love this U table that was donated to us from Donors Choose. Also, a big shout out to Miss 5th’s amazing ELA center organization– which helped us all year.

Our class library!

Our Social Studies bulletin board showcased our California Missions learning. These mini mission flip books  made a stand out bulletin board that got a lot of compliments!

It was a fantastic open house, the best one yet… and I will for sure have a Photo Booth every year because we had a line out the door of parents wanting to snap some pictures of us with the kids.

There’s so much advice I would tell first year- There’s so much advice I would tell first year- teacher-me…. Especially after the last (almost) 2 years of teaching; barely afloat. This year is so hard. I have to stop regularly and tell my student teacher, “it’s never been like this”. But to my core, it’s always been- children first, relationships first, or nothing else matters. Though this year is tough in new ways, there’s still much hope and laughter each day. Thanks @eveleon26 for reminding me of my first, wonderful year of teaching- so I can bring that energy, excitement each day- no matter the circumstance. For all of my teacher friends out there, I see you- I know it’s hard- and I’m grateful for you. (P.S-it’s almost winter break, you got this!) #tiredteacher #cleareyesfullheartscantlose
