Spelling Homework Menu

July 12, 2012 By fancyfreein4th

Are you looking for a way to make spelling more fun and less of a chore for your students this year? Here is a fun option for you. It is great because it adds choice, it differentiates and it saves you time- which don’t we all love!  I created this 2 years ago and my students love it. It is a spelling menu. I had them glue it on the back of their homework folder the first year I used this, and this past year I had them place it in a sheet protector as a reference sheet. The Spelling Menu gives them options of what they want to do for homework. Each assignment is given a point value. For example, easier assignments that are lower on the levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy, are only worth 5 points. These activities include things like writing their words in ABC order. The 10-15 point activities take longer and require more thought and the 20 point option is the most time consuming, and challenges.  By Wednesday they have to have at least 25 points completed. I go around and stamp the 25 points on Wednesday’s, and they save them until Friday when they turn them in with the rest of their points.  A lot of students do more than 50 points. Besides giving them choice, it also teaches students important life skills like being self motivated, not procrastinating and being responsible. I have successfully used this spelling activity in grades 4th, 5th and 6th.  I would love to know what you think. I posted this on my newly created TpT store, so check it out, and become a follower!

This is a great idea. I've been trying to come up with a way to offer more choices for spelling practice. I love how you incorporated Blooms and how you check them on Wednesdays AND Fridays.

I uploaded it as a word document so that teachers could add things that they thought was appropriate for their class. I think it is totally doable for 3rd grade. What I would do/have done in the past is introduce all the activities in centers or as homework during the first trimester so that the class and parent become used to the different activities. Then I introduce the Spelling Menu during the 2nd trimester- this helps them work up to it and minimizes confusion.

I like the idea of a homework menu. I'll have to try that.
