{Week 2} BTS in a FLASH! Curriculum Must Haves

August 2, 2015 By fancyfreein4th

This week’s link up focuses on Curriculum! There are so many wonderful products out there in TpT land and in the midst of the TpT Back to School Sale, we wanted to showcase some of the must haves that we cannot live without!

**Oh and there is a big giveaway at the bottom of the post, so keep reading!**
Math Problem of the Week is one of my products that is tried and true and I use it every year….
I love this product because it PERFECT for common core and getting students to become Problem Solvers who Persevere!   I designed the Problem of the Week to be an in class activity rather than an enrichment handout that goes home.  This encourages the students to critically solve these on their own, or with a partner/group, rather than take it home and have a parent or sibling help.  In a nutshell there are 28 problems that span the different CCSS Math strands and ask the students to critically think, solve the problem using various methods and then prove their answer in numbers, pictures and words.

As for a product that I CANNOT live without, it has to be Jivey’s Mentor Sentences!

I have not been shy about how much I ADORE Jivey’s Mentor Sentences.  Maybe after seeing me post and IG about it for the millionth time you will check it out? I promise, implementing Mentor Sentences in your class will change the way you teach DO grammar! Jivey has an awesome resource page on her blog that walks you through how to get started using these in your classroom. There are videos and blog post from other amazing teachers that use them too!

Lastly, for what is on my wishlist and what I am going to scoop up during the TpT BTS Sale is from Mary from Teaching With a Mountainview. She creates the most amazing task cards.  The big item on my wishlist for this year is her Reading Skills Task Card Bundle. I work at an inner city school and my classroom is full of diverse learners. Some of the kids in my class read at a first grade level. I work tirelessly throughout the year to bring them up as much as I can.  You can often times find me working through recess and lunch.  During the 2nd trimester I lead a small intervention group 3 days a week in the mornings and these task cards will be a great addition to that, as well as added into my everyday literacy centers.

You can join in all week too to share your Curriculum Must Haves! Simply drag this picture into powerpoint (or whatever you feel comfortable with) and share your 3 Curriculum Must Have images on the polaroid below Top Teacher Faves and link up. You can find the flashes here.

Now for the GIVEAWAY! The gals from iTeachFourth are giving away $10 to each of their stores!

While the phrase, “Open schools” bothers me be While the phrase, “Open schools” bothers me because it minimizes the HUGE lengths that teachers have gone through this past year. Where we, in a split moment, closed our classrooms and said goodbye to our students not knowing how this was going to play out. No matter whether we are teaching virtually, hybrid or even in a social distanced format...school has never been closed. Teachers went from being called heroes 🦸‍♀️ a year ago to being strongly criticized and undervalued. I am so proud and inspired by all of my teacher friends who have had to reinvent the wheel this year. I am so relieved that this is the first step back to the classroom setting where the students will continue to learn, flourish and be like “the good ole days”. Dose one done ✅. One step closer to being back in the classroom, IRL!
Spending this lazy Sunday afternoon writing 💕Va Spending this lazy Sunday afternoon writing 💕Valentine’s to my students. I am writing different figurative language notes on each postcard. Then we are going to share them on GoogleMeets during our morning meeting and vote which figurative language is on each student’s post card! You can take the teacher out of the classroom but they will still find ways to engage; no matter the distance! This year I have to mail these to my students ((because of distance learning)) but who doesn’t love some good ole snail mail 🐌 💌.
This isn’t the best picture, but that’s not th This isn’t the best picture, but that’s not the point...

I love being a teacher. I am aways challenged and get to be creative (especially these past 11 months). I feel at home at my school, and I’ve missed it so much since working at home. My district is in a zip code that is highly impacted with COVID-19, and we have felt the effects tremendously. Everyday, I am amazed by how resilient my students have been since their little world’s 🌍 changed on March 13th, 2020. It’s been one, wild ride, reinventing teaching, trying to stay motivated, trying to keep them engaged while feeling supported and seen. Yet, I’m hopeful this chapter soon will end. Amidst all of the unexpected and difficult things that have happened this last year... there’s still a lot of good out there. Look at this 💛 glimmer of hope and goodness. My uncle and Father in Law just made a class set of desks for my students (plus 30 more for other kids at my school). They used their stimulus money to give back to my school community. This desk will be their own special spot, and memory of the time we learned from home. I’m feeling really grateful and I can’t wait to see past the masks and imagine the smiles that my students will have when they pick these new family heirlooms up on Friday!
Sometimes it is all about the little goals you mak Sometimes it is all about the little goals you make for 2021. Ones like drinking more water and making sure to stand while distance teaching. I miss the days of walking around the classroom, running down the the stairs to grab my class after recess and hopping into a coworkers classroom at lunch.
Cheers to the New Year. I felt like I needed a lon Cheers to the New Year. I felt like I needed a longer winter break but as soon as the school day started, it was game on. I was so excited to see my students online, ready to learn. I am constantly in awe of how resilient they are and how even though we have yet to be together in person, we have created such a supportive and close community. We giggle, we work, we do the best we can and feel good about it together.
